Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird has secured a new four-year contract with one of the UK’s largest ferry operators for the annual maintenance and dry docking of five large vessels in its fleet. A £750m hydrogen production plant is to be built on the banks of the River Mersey. Essar, which operates the Stanlow oil refinery, and Progressive Energy, developers of HyNet North West, an industrial decarbonisation cluster, have joined forces to set up a venture to produce low carbon hydrogen at the Ellesmere Port refinery. High speed rail has an "essential part to play" in the delivery of the UK’s net zero carbon target, according to a report from train manufacturer Alstom. The report - The UK’s New Green Age: A Step Change in Transport Decarbonisation – describes High Speed 2 (HS2) as "central to modal shift, including providing an alternative to planes". The latest Contract Manufacturing Index showed that the subcontracting market was down 46% in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2020 compared to the previous quarter. Year on year though the market barely moved, ending 2021 1% high than it ended 2020. Those figures, though, conceal a volatile 12 months. UK car production declined -29.3% in 2020, to 920,928 units, according to the latest figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).  December, output was down -2.3% to 71,403, with some firms affected by border closures and thus component supply issues. Mining giant Anglo American, which is responsible for the Woodsmith polyhalite mine development on the North Yorkshire coast, has unveiled a huge increase in planned spending on the project.
