Work has begun on a first-of-its-kind net zero flexible power generation project in Worksop. VH Global Sustainable Energy Opportunities (GSEO) is funding the construction of two heat and power plants in the town which combine high-efficiency, gas-fired engine technology with a carbon capture and re-use system. Outline plans will be revealed for a green energy hub at the former Thorpe Marsh power station site, near Doncaster. Property, renewable energy and minerals firm The Banks Group wants to create the flexible energy management hub through reclamation and restoration of the derelict former power station. The total pipeline of floating offshore wind projects has more than doubled in the last 12 months, new figures have revealed. A niche technology until relatively recently, floating turbines could soon provide 185GW of capacity worldwide if all planned projects go ahead, up from 91GW a year ago. Engineering firm Rolls-Royce has shortlisted six sites for a major new factory building nuclear reactors. The government wants to build 16 Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the next 25 years to secure the UK's energy supply and hit its net-zero target by 2050.  They would be built on a production line and assembled at existing sites. Rolls-Royce Submarines has revealed that the iHub, on Derby’s Infinity Park, will be the home of its new nuclear training academy. The engineering giant, which powers the UK’s underwater defence, announced last month that the dedicated Nuclear Skills Academy in Derby will launch along with 200 new nuclear apprenticeships in September 2022.
