Model maker Hornby has strengthened its British manufacturing base and pulled capacity out of China as cost of labour in the Asian giant escalates.
The hobby company’s model paint brand, Humbrol, known for its iconic “tinlets” of enamel, has shifted two thirds of its production back to the UK ten years after factory operations went to the Far East. Frank Martin, chief executive, said the upheaval was sparked by the rising costs of labour in China, which he said trebled in the last seven years and are set to double again in the next decade.
“If you include the expense of freight then the cost differences become negligible,” he said.
All Humbrol enamel paints and finishing products are now made by a family-run business in North West London.
Mr Martin said Cricklewood-based Rustins, established in 1924, trumped competitors in China and India, saying: “In the end they could give us the best combination of price, quality, and speed of service.” More …
