Crown Paints hands over landmark donation for Hull UK City of Culture 2017
Crown Paints has marked its support for Hull UK City of Culture 2017 with the handover of its 1000th litre of paint to the city.
A specially branded container celebrating the donation – which relates to in excess of 150 tins – was produced by Crown Paints for the event.
Representatives from Hull UK City of Culture 2017 visited the company’s manufacturing centre in Sculcoates Lane to take delivery of the paint.
During Hull UK City of Culture, Crown’s products have played a key role in transforming the city, supporting a range of initiatives and good causes that have helped put the area firmly on the map.
One of the most striking projects involving Crown Paints takes art outdoors, with huge murals in the historic old fishing area of Hessle Road putting colour, heritage and a passion for the city firmly on the map.

Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year shines at Skills Show
OUTSTANDING talent from the next generation of painting and decorating professionals was on display at the recent Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year Competition.
The prestigious competition, held at Birmingham’s NEC as part of the national Skills Show, showcased the skills excellence of eight regional finalists vying for the title as well as promoting careers in the industry to more than 80,000 people who visited the three-day event from November 16-18.
Bury St Edmunds student, Thomas Pawlowski, 18, scooped the Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator title, taking home the gold medal, £1,000 prize money and the chance to represent the industry on the international stage as part of Team UK in EuroSkills 2018 and WorldSkills 2019.
The student at West Suffolk College is in his final year of a City and Guilds qualification and took the title after impressing the judges with his range of skills in measuring, painting, wallpapering and intricate techniques during the 19-hour competition.
Said Tom: “I didn’t know what to expect because I was the only finalist who was a student, the others were all employed and had a lot more experience than me.
“I am the only one of my friends who chose a practical skills course. I went along to my local college and had always liked creative subjects and just really liked the sound of the Painting and Decorating course.
“It was brilliant to win and I am really hoping to go on to the Euro and WorldSkills competitions now. I’m not sure how I’ll spend the money, but I’m thinking about investing in some really nice brushes and tools.”

Crown Trade takes redecoration to the next degree
Crown Trade products are providing the University of East London with a trusted route to transform student accommodation for the new academic year under a comprehensive redecoration programme.
Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting Matt Paint, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt and Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss are all being applied as part of the refurbishment of 57 dormitories and associated kitchen areas at the university’s Docklands Campus.
Consisting of an individual bedroom and private bathroom, the dormitories – part of the Redbridge Student Accommodation – are in the transition from term time to summer school programmes.
Patrick Bishop, supervisor of the Redbridge Student Accommodation, said: “This is the best time for us to redecorate the rooms.
“We have a three to four-week period from when the full-time students move out to when the summer school learners move in, and in that time we need to redecorate all of the rooms.
“We’ve been working with Crown Paints now for four years and their products are being used because we have such a quick turnaround to get the rooms ready and we have to trust what we use.”

Crown Paints brings colour to life for Hull UK City of Culture project
Crown Paints has kicked-off its support for Hull UK City of Culture 2017 with a large scale outdoor art project, which puts colour, history and a passion for the city firmly on the map.
The UK paint manufacturer, which has a heritage stretching back hundreds of years in Hull, is helping to create a bright future for the area after signing-up as a Hull 2017 Business Club partner.
They have donated paint to a number of projects so far and the first to come to fruition has put Crown Paints’ products to best effect, with Sandtex Trade masonry paint used to create two end of terrace house murals in the Hessle Road area, which celebrate the community’s rich fishing heritage.
Installed as part of the Hull 2017 ‘Roots & Routes’ season, the Terrace Enders project involves a team of professional artists creating meaningful images of Hull’s fishing industry, its allied industries and the communities they sustained.
It has been developed by local community-led social enterprise the Goodwin Development Trust, along with the residents of Hessle Road, and funded by Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund.

Talented Ayla celebrates national title success
A YOUNG painter and decorator has been officially crowned the best apprentice in the business.
Ayla Foulis, from Dunfermline, beat off stiff competition from across the UK to win the prestigious Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year title.
The 24-year-old picked up her £1,000 prize at a special presentation at Fife College, where she is a third-year student.
Ayla said: “The Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition is a real showcase for the industry, so to win the title is a huge feather in my cap.

New investment ensures Crown Paints makes the most of waste
Crown Paints has ramped up its waste reduction capability with a major investment in new plant.
The UK paint manufacturer is supporting the activities of its award-winning social enterprise scheme NIMTECH on site at its Lancashire plant with the introduction of new granulating machinery.
The plant converts old paint containers into a new type of material, which can then be reprocessed to make garden benches, planters and other street furniture.
NIMTECH, a social enterprise providing employment opportunities for the hard to reach and long-term unemployed, has played a key role in Crown’s sustainability programme – providing the business with waste recovery and recycling services across the UK.

Flagship recycling scheme goes from strength to strength
CROWN PAINTS flagship Kick Out The Can recycling scheme is celebrating its most successful year yet.
This year saw more than double the number of containers of surplus paint brought into Crown Decorating Centres across the UK, ready to be recycled and given a new lease of life.
The final total amounted to an amazing 20,000 cans of unwanted paint being returned to the network of 135 stores during the innovative scheme’s three-week campaign.
